RADical Person: Emory Douglas

The Revolutionary Artwork of Emory Douglas
(Click to see in full size and all their glory)

Emory Douglas was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther party from 1968-1980. The majority of his work was created for the weekly newspaper the panther party put out. Prolific and profound are the first two words to come to mind when viewing his work but don't completely do them justice. His work somewhat reminds me somewhat of cartoonist Robert Dennis Crumb's, or what I've seen from his work with Supreme. It's important to know that while Mr. Douglas's pieces are super vivid and vibrant, he used nothing more than pens, markers and paper. These are some of the best representations of the voice of the working class, mostly Africans living in America and are nothing short of brilliant. Go out and buy one of the many books published of his work and give the finger to the next cop/politician you see. Not that they're all bad, but if we're being honest, Black Flag said it best: They hate us, we hate them. "ALL POWER TO nobody else but THE PEOPLE!" - R. Crumb

Bert Schneider and Gretta Ronnigan are working on a film about Huey. There planning on selling the script to Sean Penn; so look out.
I have had the privilege of talking with Gretta, mother to Sam Finger, about her relationship with Huey. She and Bert, producer of Easy Rider, helped Huey get in and out of Cuba and according to her she and Bert are the only two people who know weather or not Huey really killed that hooker.
Cheers Amir, love that post...
