California's self proclaimed "tropical-punk" four piece, Abe Vigoda is back with a new 5 song EP called Reviver. It's fucking good too. While most indie bands during this day and age are trying desperately to recreate some nastalgic era that's long gone and probably shouldn't be revisited in the first place, these dudes are keeping it realer than most while forging ahead and creating their own sound. It's artsy, it sounds fresh, it'll make you cooler if you know about it. As with any band that gets better with age, you can't help but go back after listening to Reviver and find new appreciation for in older shit. To the untrained ear, they might just sound like noise. But within that noise lies beauty, and it's no wonder that they're all skaters. I won't even try to describe their sound to you because what good would that do? Just give them a listen...or don't, but there's a method to their madness for sure. NO Age's drummer (what up, Dean?) is a believer, so much that he asked them to be the first band on his new label 'Post Premium Medium.' My advice? Pretend you know what's good and grab that shit after the jump!

Reggae in the spring isn't a new concept. Spring breaks meant Marley. I mean how could it not when your drinking a Foxy's Lager while watching a Caribbean sunset. But this year I wasn't on vacation somewhere south of Cuba. It wasn't even spring break. It didn't even feel like spring. The seasons never changed but the soundtrack certainly did.

Any whoooo, I went to a Reggae show on Saturday with Rebelution headlining. I missed the first band, Ihzzhi, which knows how to rock Isle Vista better than most, who killed it. Second came a band I could have cared less about after the show but they had a sound and it went well with my beers. They called themselves One Drop. But whatever...

REBELUTION df. united in Santa Barbara, California, built from a wide array of musical backgrounds. With Reggae as the focus, the group set out to create a fresh and vibrant sound which they dub California Reggae. The band released their highly anticipated full-length album in June of 2007 and just weeks after its release, “Courage to Grow” became one of the most downloaded Reggae albums on iTunes. By the end of the year, it had been awarded the iTunes Editors Choice: Best Reggae Album 2007.

YO, whatever. It's not so much about the band- it's about the people who support them. Santa Barbara. SANTA BARBARA, oh my god I am in love with you. It is so amazing here, but really, SB is an entirely different animal. Though it is a So Cal apocalyptic paradise, it considers itself central coast cool. Most music isn't timeless, some scenes are and therefor their anthems live on to eternity. IV, or rather Isle Vista, is a place where people(UCSB Students) brag about the community consuming 1% of the nations booze, where the biggest Halloween costume party draws in every youth in the surrounding 100 miles. These trippers and ragers live for Reb. Rebelution was born there and noone will let it die there.

So with some background and what-have-yous here is what I have to say to wrap this whole Rebelution thing up. These dudes blew up, toured the world, and then came home and I was there for their homecoming. I mean they come around once every two months or so but it was St. Patty's Day, they were Rebelution, and weed is green. The venue was packed and the stoney Santa Barbarians were full of anticipation. The kids came on and you could tell that their shows outside of SB were BS because of how tense and excited they were. Finally a crowd with more energy then they themselves could possibly have for their own music. Everyone was more stoked about their music then they were and it made a great show.

So I hope you put a little Reb in your springtime happenings, its not a bad idea.

We Hear Scarlett Johansson's Tom Waits Covers Album But Can't Write About How It Sounds

Yesterday at Joe's Pub we heard Scarlett Johansson's new album of Tom Waits covers produced by Dave Sitek. We aren't allowed to talk about it yet, so here's some stuff we witnessed people doing while listening to the album.

-A dude in the corner writing furiously with what looked like a cheap (or free) pen, pausing only to refill it with ink. It was really dark in there, but the reason we could see this is because he also had one of those little lights for writing in dark rooms. It sorta got us thinking that this guy might actually be the future and also that there is a guy walking around New York with a glass bottle of ink in his bag so if someone were to go up and kick it then ink would explode in his bag. Not that we would do that though, we are not music magazine bullies.

-There was free food—sandwiches cut up and placed at each table—but no one ate any of it. We looked at it for awhile and thought about eating it, but then we didn't because we thought it would be one of those things where we would take a bite and everyone would look at us because they would hear us chewing loudly, drowning out the music.

-Every drink, no matter what, was handed out in an incredibly large glass. We watched this one guy drink like 60 oz of orange juice before the album even started.

-David Bowie appears on two songs on the album. It's interesting that he is staying relevant by showing up on albums by bands that young people care about rather than flat out trying to make music that he thinks young people care about. Also, Nick Zinner plays on the album, as does much of Celebration.

-Whats the deal with people being all paranoid about celebrities making music? Jane Birkin made awesome stuff with Gainsbourg, and Shaquille O'Neil...uhhhh, he had maybe two jams. It keeps things exciting.

-Dave Sitek said the word "banana" like 13 times.

-On a nervousness scale during the Q+A, with 1 being the least nervous and 10 being the most nervous, Sitek was a 3 and Johansson was a 9.

If you're not one of those people who hides under rocks from the mass media then you just might recognize these Directors for their work. From television commercials to music videos, the Directors Bureau handles shit. Watch the commercial and music video reels for each director. I enjoyed revisiting them; instead of looking at these moving pictures as mundane marketing schemes I could watch a director's reel and see all of his or her work in a row and absorb the directors style and mise en scène. For me these directors use everything they have to their advantages. With all of the progression, these dudes are in front pushin' shit.

So, the year was 1986. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube were mere high school misfits running around Compton like R. Kelly at recess looking for girlies in biker shorts. Their crew was The C.I.A, ironically enough, and it predates their later, more well known group NWA. This shit is so money, they sound like the black Beastie Boys. Yelling at the top of their lungs as if they didn't have any mics in their studio, which was probably Dre's bedroom or something along those lines. This was released in 1988 with the 3 original tracks and their instrumentals. Thank God for trill ass recordings like this, otherwise I might not know how to conduct myself on a daily basis.

Emory Douglas was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther party from 1968-1980. The majority of his work was created for the weekly newspaper the panther party put out. Prolific and profound are the first two words to come to mind when viewing his work but don't completely do them justice. His work somewhat reminds me somewhat of cartoonist Robert Dennis Crumb's, or what I've seen from his work with Supreme. It's important to know that while Mr. Douglas's pieces are super vivid and vibrant, he used nothing more than pens, markers and paper. These are some of the best representations of the voice of the working class, mostly Africans living in America and are nothing short of brilliant. Go out and buy one of the many books published of his work and give the finger to the next cop/politician you see. Not that they're all bad, but if we're being honest, Black Flag said it best: They hate us, we hate them. "ALL POWER TO nobody else but THE PEOPLE!" - R. Crumb

'Trill As Fuck' Recordings: Warsaw, 1977

Before this almighty four were called Joy Division, they went under a different name. 'Warsaw'. The year was 1977, Ian Curtis was 19 or 20 years old depending on the date. They came out of Salford, Manchester with intelligence, stoicism and a wit dryer than a rapist...oh yea not to mention their talent for beating the shit out of the their instruments and insisting you not call them a punk act. Whatever you say dudes, I'de call it Calypso Crunk if you asked me to. So they released their self-titled EP/LP in 1977 when punk was just a brewin' and kid were starting to realize they didn't have to dress and act like everyone else. So the band was apparently disappoint in the post production of this album (done by RCA) and they shelfed it and it circulated as a bootleg for many years until it's official commercial release in 1994, sheesh. Not unlike The Misfits' Static Age sessions, which I'll post soon if I haven't already.
Sooo where was I? Oh yea, It was about Goddamn time people, whatever it's here, it's queer, don't call it a comeback. Any fan of these radical bro's can tell the differences between their Warsaw and their Joy Division recordings. For one, Ian sounds like a 'thirsty young hustler' with loads of energy, and a hunger to stick it to the Man. As for two, three and four; Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner were so clearly influence by punk rock that they were playing it.
So in '78 they changed their name to Joy Division; ironically enough, Ian Curtis became depressed more or less about the state of the world and his place in it. And the rest is history and I mean that in the most respectful way possible, because this article wasn't supposed to go on past 1978. As far as 1979 and 1980 go, well that's an entirely seperate, and more detailed post, so stay tuned.

"Fuck what you like." Says Brain, A.R.E Weapons' lead singer. And I totally agree with him, it doesn't matter what you like or listen to, any of you. This band is all that matters right now.
Coming straight out of New Work City with the force of a freight train in 2000 with their self-titled debut, these dudes play some of the best semi-synthed, punk, bad ass rock n roll (good bad not evil) to come out since Joy Division or the early Misfits. And the lyrics, sheeesh! When I heard about them, obviously tried right away to download all of their shit that I could, but even I couldn't find much from their 3 LP's. Then my boss, Mr. A-ron the downt0wn of aNYthing / Off Bowery fame (plug) threw a party last Monday on new years eve and enlisted in the Weapons along with The Virgins to set the mood. My brother and I were so psyched having fallen in love with the 4 or 5 songs I was able to freeload from the interweb by them. So we're standing outside of the Mercury Lounge waiting for A-ron to get there and up walks Brain who got my brother and I inside. The show was better than we could have ever imagined. A week or so goes by, blah blah blah, and Brain comes by the store we are opening for the brand I work for, Off Bowery and he brought he some of their compact discs. Turns out, after listening to all of their albums, they are the best band out right now. Yeaaah shithead, I said it. Read what another journalist said,

"A.R.E. Weapons make music that makes you feel like a cool warrior who’s just cut the head off his mortal enemy and is holding high to triumphant cheers on the battlefield."

Their new album, which was released September, is better than the first two. Nearly every song is an anthem with these dudes, and they're about as infectious as AIDS. Whether it's "Let's go to Time Square, let's go to Time Square, let's go to Time Square, yeah!" Or "Stay weird, stay wild, stay free." Or "Sweee-eeeee-eeet Jesuuus, Jesuuus", this band rules it with the realest lyrics one could muster. Like,
"you got a style that you think is rare, here's a quarter buddy, call someone who cares."

Here's the first album I got that comes out in this new year. Hot Chip's Made In The Dark, out January 28th, 2008. They've described themselves as "loathsome but awesome." To put it plainly, the album is fucking silly. Hot Chip just gets better and better and their music reflects it. They will be touring in the US in April, but there are two shows scheduled for New York and LA, Feb. 2nd and the 4th, which will precede their European tour that ends in May. For some reason they left out their 2007 single 'My Piano' which might have been their best song to date, but this album is good enough without it. I won't say anymore, you be the judge. DFA. All. Fucking. Day!

Recently New York City's own Acapulco Gold was featured in New York Times. They teamed up with the one and only Ari Marcoupolis for a sick, high fashion photo shoot in Paris. The shoot featured skaters Luidgi Gaydu and Martin Keller and an anonymous female model, there is also a video that accompanies the 4 page spread, entitled 'haute wheels.' Wu-Tang Clan: The Tainting of a Legend

Wu-Tang Clan's new album came out today and everyone seems to have a lot of different feelings towards it. If you know me, you know how much I live and breath Wu-Tang, but recently I can't help but feeling like sad and angry about this new project. I've been waiting in anticipation for the past 9 or so months for this album and then about a month ago comes this wave of bad press surrounding the Clan. It kinda sucks, to be honest. RZA apparently took the whole project into his own hands, wouldn't let any other producers in, The Neptunes, Kanye West are among the many producers who were drooling to work with them. Ghostface Killah is quoted saying "I feel the new Wu-Tang album is bullshit, it's real bullshit." Raekwon has been super vocal in expressing his opinion in the matter and apparently plans to get together and record a whole new album, entitled Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang without the RZA's hand. Again, all of this makes me very sad. To get more in depth, here's what else the Chef had to say on the matter:

(Monday, 10 December 2007) With Wu-Tang’s fifth studio album 8 Diagrams hitting stores tomorrow (Dec. 11), Raekwon spoke to MTV about his plans to record a new Clan album without RZA called Shaolin vs. the Wu-Tang. Rae has been very vocal in the last month about his discontent with the musical direction in which RZA took the new Wu album, claiming the other members didn’t have enough input. When asked about his plans for a RZA-less Wu album, Raekwon had this to say:

“That’s how I feel right now…It’s coming and it’s gonna be a lesson learned. That’s a lesson to bust the Abbott’s ass and let him know what we do. At the end of the day, if nobody don’t do nothing, Chef’s gonna show and prove. You [can only] hold in but so much, my dude.”

He continued:

“You dealing with a whole crew collectively, and [our] collective thoughts…You gotta keep that a part of the protocol. That wasn’t a part of the protocol — we still try to give this man as much props as he deserves, ’cause he did so much. It’s like listening to [Michael] Jordan, saying, ‘Follow my hand.’ But at the same time, Jordan ain’t been around for a while. So now it’s gotta be about the team. Ain’t no I’s in team. When Jordan’s head gets too big, you gotta tell Jordan that’s what it ain’t about. It’s team.”

This really sucks to hear them talk like this, I hope you get it together fellas for our sake and yours. Long live the Killa Bees and peace to the Gods and the Earths.

In light of my current generosity, here is one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time. Let's consider this one of the first 'mixtapes' if you will. True, there have been many movie soundtracks with really awesome tunes, but this in addition to the movie was somewhat of a package. The reason I call it a 'mixtape' is because most of these songs were out on Simon & G-funk records already, but they used their know-how in compiling this mix of their already hit songs (not in greatest hits manner) for the backdrop of this remarkably classic fucking film. I dunno about you jerks, but older, more mature women who are aggressive as Bon Jovi's relentless album making, are very attractive to me. Aside from our girl Marilyn in her hundreds of films, Anne Bancroft pretty much takes the cake in this film as Mrs. Robinson. The daughter was pretty hot, but the mom oozed way more sex appeal and knew what to do with it, even though Dustin Hoffman didn't. If you don't already know, re-evaluate your shit/life, but here it is for you. GO buy the movie without a doubt or at least rent it...and maybe don't wear a bra next time, not you, her...I don't even know her name, what is it? Lanolin?

It's no secret that Paul Simon is one of my favorite people in the universe. So here I'm sharing with you what I think is one the best folk-pop albums of all time, and an all around classic for my dunny, Rhymin' Simon. Released in 1972, two years after the last studio album he recorded with his long-time partner-in-folk, Art Garfunkel or as I like to call him, Artie G-funk era. You really can't go wrong with songs like 'Duncan', 'Mother And Child Reunion' and of course 'Me And Julio Down by the Schoolyard.' According to 'Me And Julio...' Paul Simon was a radical motherfucker, he was like oh word you're parents don't like me? That's cool, tell your pops I'll choke his old ass out, and tell your mom she's the one who needs help if she's gonna spit on the ground every single time my name gets mentioned, which isn't very ladylike of her. Yea so here it is, with addition bonus outtakes of some of your favorite songs, little known fact: Shabba Ranks plays guitar on 'Mother And Child Reunion...That's my guess at least.

Today's 7'' comes from the delightfully horrific bunch hailing from New Jersey, my favorite punk band of all the lands, The Misfits. The year was 1977, Carter was the president and these kids released their first single on Blank records and the recording is so fucked up, it's glorious. The single is 'Cough/Cool' and the b-side is 'She.' These are two of the only Misfits songs featuring an electric piano, which was played by Glenn Danzig, the incomparable lead singer. A little fun fact for you geeks, the band took their name from the 1961 film 'The Misfits' starring Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. Enjoy.

"From Rio to Hong Kong" by Terry Richardson

To end the last chapter of Diesel's seasonal 'zine "Only the brave", Terry Richardson, my ma'afucking hero, put together this ridiculous exhibition along with the likes of acclaimed Hong Kong artist, Michael Lau. Richardson is very well known and equally respected for his works' provocativeness. He has an ability to combine sexuality and humor in a way no one else can and his photographs always stand out of a crowd. For this exhibit, his shots range from a variety of personalities in Brazil to "funk ball parties" and shantytown. Michael Lau contributed a lifesize doll of Terry Richardson along with a portrait of him and the two collaborated on an illustration book. Too bad we don't live in Hong Kong, but if you do, you have until Dec. 23rd to check it out. For the rest of us, here's the closest we'll get:

Today's (first edition) comes from a band called Randoms. This 7''/EP was recorded in 1977 but wasn't released until 1979. The song is 'Let's Get Rid of New York' and the b-side called 'ABCD.' Contrary to the name, this track is an ode to the great city of New York, it also happens to be one of my favorite songs right now. This band is definitely one of the best kept secrets...so shut the fuck up and peep it...what up Diamond D!

David Vandervelde - The Moonstation House Band

This band is pretty fuckin' rad. Spearheaded by Canada native, David Vandervelde, who plays piano, guitar and is on vocals, this band brings back some old time southern shit with this 2007release. If you're a fan of Marc Bolan and T-Rex like I am, you'll love this band. Actually, you'll probably think Marc Bolan is in this band because of the uncanny similarities between his and Vandervelde's voices. It's not a gimmick though, they aren't just some retro wannabe band who thrives off of sounding like their influences, this is solid shit. I've uploaded the whole album, it's only eight tracks. So check them out for yourselves, if you know what's good for ya, ya bastids.

RAD Person: Travis Graves aka Mt. Egypt

I remember getting chills the first time I heard 'Strange, Sad Air' by Mt. Egypt. I think I found out about this dude through professional skateboarder, Jason Dill's clothing brand FUCKING AWESOME. When the brand was new they had a website with all kinds of dumb shit to download and myself being somewhat of a researcher into the lives of those I admire, I downloaded every little tidbit. Anyway, I came across a few of his songs. Mt. EGYPT is the moniker of semi-professional skateboarder, Travis Graves, who's from Virginia, but moved to New York City. He's kind of in and out of the music business from what I've gathered, never really making full attempts to tour and whatnot. But he does have two solo albums out so far, 2003's Battening the Hatches and his 2005 release, Perspectives. Whatever, whatever, the dude belts out sorrows and anecdotes of love, pain, girlies, his mother and living in the city with the nonchalance of, well...a chill ass New York skater who played guitar and sings. His voice is lovely and his songs aren't even songs. There's something super-unconventional about the way he goes about his music, as a matter of fact I couldn't tell you what exactly it is that draws you to him. It's his sinicism. And Bluntness. I bet he smokes blunts. I don't care what he does, I know he skates well, he toured with The Flaming Lips, he's good friends with Jason Dill and Erika Christensen aaand sometimes his voice makes me feel like a baby again. A baby who smokes cigarettes and drinks and shit, with a jaded outlook on kindergarten...and recess...and all that f@#$ed up bull@#$%! Sike no, but seriously, check him out because you'll probably dig him. If not, there's always Chris Brown. Let me also say that this artist will be the first to get the FUCKING AWESOME stamp on this site. Peace to Mendela and Farrakhan.

At first I thought they were some weak ass band everyone was talking about because most people don't know shit, but then their song 'Rich Girls' grew on me like a tumor. I got to chill with these dudes over the Summer when interning for A-Ron and they're pretty mature for their age. They only 19 and 20 years old, the 4 of them but they definitely know what they're doing. Imagine The Strokes if they weren't such pussies and they weren't signed so they really didn't give a fuck, well, up until around early July, The Virgins weren't signed to a major label. But thanks to the loyal street people who rep their shit, and to aNYthing, word of mouth spread and now I believe they are signed to Atlantic and are working on a full length LP as we speak. Two of their songs were featured on the last season of the HBO show 'Entourage' before they were even signed. They play shows all the time in NYC, so check them out if you're around. "Pusha T, Push-a-ton.."

Format Magazine: Pusha T of Clipse

With just two major label releases over the course of five years and one legendary unreleased album from 1997, Clipse’s career spans across a decade and a millennium. They redefined hip-hop and defined coke rap before Jeezy was moving keys, but around the same time T.I. was just starting to get his trap on. They have, up until recently, been a canvas for arguably the biggest production duo in hip-hop and with their new imprint they plan on continuing the masterpiece that is Clipse. Pusha T, one half of Clipse and one fourth of the Re Up Gang, talks deals, movies and his favorite Clipse song.

“When P gets excited about a new song, he will hit me and be like, ‘Come to the studio right now, if you don’t get here within five minutes, I’m calling Jay-Z.’”

Format: So how did this new deal with Columbia come about? Pusha T: When we put out Hell Hath No Fury, we were already talking to Jive about letting us go. Us being there wasn’t good for both parties. As soon as they let the project go, there was flurry of offers from different labels. Hip-hop from Columbia hollered at our manager, Tony Draper. He took a flight to Houston to see us and was like, ‘Are you guys free? Is it really true?’ Rick Rubin was totally interested. They knew the history. They knew the ups and downs. They started selling us on them trying to win with us, so on and so forth. But truth be told, we were on the phone with Interscope until the last minute on some eleventh hour shit. It was us, Jimmy Iovine and Pharrell. They were trying to get it done, but when we told them what was on the table with Columbia, Jimmy and P were like, ‘Your deal is better.’ P said, ‘You need to sign that deal.’ So we are no longer with Star Trak, but the Neptunes are still going to be involved with the new project. We will always be cool and there were definitely no hard feelings.

Format: Clipse’s first album, Exclusive Audio Footage was supposed to come out in 1998 but never saw the light of day. If you look around, you can find it on the Internet. Will it ever come out? How has Clipse changed since then? Pusha T: The content of the Clipse hasn’t really changed since 1998. Nothing has really changed. It’s still coke rap, but we didn’t call it that back then. It was just life. Now, I guess, there’s a whole genre of it. But it was Neptunes produced and it was definitely pushing the bar, musically. It was a very theatrical album. It was a little more movie-esque than our other two albums.
Format: The Clipse has always been known for its a-typical sound; from “Grindin’” to “Mr. Me Too,” you guys have never dropped a typical single? Pusha T: It’s a product of being next to the Neptunes. We’d be in the studio with Pharrell and Chad and – insert big name artist here – and these artists are asking for something that sounded like something else. Then it would often turn into a screaming match between Pharrell and the artist. Then it would calm down a little and Pharrell would get really sarcastic, like telling Chad to ‘Throw me that snare’ or ‘Pull up that one drum kit,’ you know, really sarcastic. But you know, the music business is so like that, everything references something else. At the end of the day, Pharrell and Chad would always throw the juice on it and make it bang. The fact is, though, Pharrell and Chad are weirdos with hits. You know, like mad scientists. They have a rep for making hits, but how can you not let them create? They flooded the market with certain sounds, because artists were asking for those sounds. That’s not innovative. The stuff they will be remembered for is the really innovative stuff. When P gets excited about a new song, he will hit me and be like, ‘Come to the studio right now, if you don’t get here within five minutes, I’m calling Jay-Z.’ When you get that call, you know you got to move fast.

“Nigo has shown us a lot of love and we like to show it back.”

Format: So what are The Clipse up to right now? Pusha T: Just winding down on the tour. Recording Re Up Gang album shit. Expect a new single in 2008. As far as features, we are going to finish the album ourselves. Personally, I don’t want to put anyone on the album. Re-Up needs to be branded. People need to understand what we do as artists. If you look at the artists outside Re-Up that we’ve shared tracks with in the past, it’s people like Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Jermaine Dupri. These people are legends not our peers.
Format: You guys were on the Bape, BBC, Ice Cream shit very early for obvious reasons, but never made a big deal about it. Pusha T: We still rock BBC, Ice Cream. It’s really a support thing, first and foremost. Secondarily, as I said in a line a long time ago, ‘When you create the mold, you can break the mold.’ When we want to stop rocking it, we can, because we started it. I don’t care if people think it’s played out. Nigo has shown us a lot of love and we like to show it back. Format: Can we expect any Clipse clothing collabos? Pusha T: No collaborations. Those guys got it on smash. Format: What does the Clipse mean? Pusha T: Came from full eclipse. We wanted to cast a shadow over the industry.

“…we are talking about a quarter billion dollar black man in the `70s. This movie did not do that justice.”

Format: What’s your favorite record you’ve ever done? Pusha T: Wow. Nobody has ever asked that before. I’d probably have to say “Momma I’m Sorry” or “Keys Open Doors.” Records like that. They got the demon in them. Certain records are big records. Certain records are reaction records. There’s nothing better than doing that raw ass record. That’s the fun record when the audience understands what you’re getting at.
Format: You saw American Gangster, what’d you think? Pusha T: It was alright. To me, this movie should have been Scarface. I needed three hours. I needed to know more about Bumpy Johnson. All I got was that he died and that Frank was his enforcer. Also, the progression wasn’t clear. One minute Frank is dealing a half a key of heroin and then next minute he’s overseas. I didn’t see the rise to power. I didn’t get to see his enemies either. Yeah, he shot Tango on the street but I didn’t really know who Tango was. I needed nothing about Richie Robbins marriage. And we needed to expound on heroin coming on US planes and in soldiers’ coffins. I mean, come on. Drug importing on US Army planes? I want know more about that! I think this movie needed to be done like Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. That movie was detailed but also epic at the same time. And how did Nicky Barnes not play a bigger role in the movie? The movie itself, for what they did, was captivating. However, we are talking about a quarter billion dollar black man in the `70s. This movie did not do that justice.

Format: Have you seen the Nicky Barnes documentary? Pusha T: Amazing.

Format: Are you familiar with Black Mafia Family in Atlanta? You think Meech warrants his own movie some day? Pusha T: Familiar, of course. I mean, I didn’t know him or anything, but I definitely think it should. He’s not guilty yet and hopefully he doesn’t end up being guilty, but I can tell you the accusations alone warrant a movie!
Format: Any movie roles on the horizon?
Pusha T: Haven’t done any acting, but I am definitely interested.
Format: Who chose the first single off Hell Hath No Fury? Pusha T: “Mr. Me Too” was our choosing. A lot of things went into Hell…so much drama, controversy, bad blood, negative energy. It was like we wanted to let the public have it. We had the outlook that nothing was going to work anyway. By this time I had burned all the bridges. I had said everything wrong, I was not a diplomat. There’s a way to handle everything. I fucked it all up. But I did it. I said it. It happened. At the end of the day, we felt like it was never going to work. Our true fans will get it. They will love it. There’s no way with this hiatus and all the talk that we could come out with a celebratory album. It would have been a lie. Let’s address the industry shit. “Wamp Wamp,” that was a second single, it was more along the lines of ‘Fuck it, we have no support, let’s cater to the fans,’ we had to keep the energy up since we got shows. It was the definition of east coast club feel, to me.

Format: What are you feeling right now outside of Clipse? Pusha T: In general, I really like that show First 48. American Gangster on BET is amazing. Alicia Keys. Kanye’s “Good Morning” is my shit and I think Kanye has record of the year for “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” To me, that is one of the most inspiring records ever made. Devin the Dude is hot. Jeezy is hot. Z-Ro from Houston. I’m very interested in what Plies’ next album looks like. I think he’s got it.

Format: Why is it so hard for hip hop artist to break out of the DC, Maryland and Virginia? The area has produced R&B acts for years, but you and Missy Elliot are the only rappers to be successful out of Virginia. And Wale is the only dude out of DC and Maryland. Pusha T: I could be wrong about my philosophy, but here it goes. My area is sort of like a melting pot for so many things. We haven’t been able to define a sound. Every other region has a sound. I think Virginia doesn’t have a defined sound. There’s good music here, but there hasn’t been one sound that made everyone say “YO”…it’s just been individuals. As far as Maryland and DC, there’s a lot of competition with Bmore club and go-go. I go to DC and I want see the go-go shit. A lot of places, hip-hop is that energy. I think it can also be that energy for DC, but it’s competing. Ultimately, we as artists are going do what we do, as long as we are creating, we are doing our job. It’s time for the radio stations to zone in and say, ‘Oh shit, this is from hometown area.’ I go to Atlanta and I’m hearing signed and unsigned artists on the radio. It needs to be like that everywhere. The gap is steadily closing.

Mobb Deep's debut album Juvenile Hell is some of my favorite shit to listen to, whenever. They were 17 years old and just as ornery and reckless as you know them to be now. The two met at the High School of Art & Design and started rapping together under the name Poetical Profits. Soon after they changed their name and the rest is history. I wish I could've been their age in 1993 when they dropped this brilliance so I could be friends with them and take part in some of their crime. You get to hear Prodigy as a teenager in high school, expressing dreams and aspirations he had as an adolescent, like

"I used to dream of bein' an architect/easier said than done, believe me it's
hard to get/outta the projects without forgetting where you came from/my parents
told me from day one, finish school and avoid all obstacles/but my environment,
makes is so impossible."

The most earnest, though is in song 'Peer Pressure', where we get a glimpse into the minds of the youth and what we went through as teens, whether you grew up in the suburbs or the 'hood. Prodigy asserts,

"...like in junior high, I used to wonder why certain females went out with
certain guys/then one day it all dawned on me, yo/you gotta be down and have it
goin' on, see/I wasn't down with the mainstream or should I say their team/heh!
now I'm gettin' steamed/gotta find a way to get accepted by my peers, so now I'm
sippin' on beers/buyin' new gear, nothin' but the best/forget Levi's, strictly
Polo and Guess."

This shit is so ill, I can't say enough about it. Pee and Hav are not only mean, but they're articulate as well. As if I ever doubted their lyrical ability, these songs are a reassurance of how seriously fierce these kids are on the mic. In the jailhouse-blues anthem, 'Locked in Spotfford', Havoc alleges

"So sit back and just chill/before you make a little nigga have to get ill/only
got a month left, so I gotta be on my best/but yet and still herb niggas wanna
put me to the test/so I wild, with a blade and a Kool-Aid smile/let the juvenile
catch wreck for a sec/damn, I wish I could put my hands on a nice fat tech and
blow a nigga to babylon/but if you don't got a knuckle game, kid that's a damn
shame."

When listening to Juvenile Hell, I get the same feeling I do when listening to my favorite punk albums, Minor Threat's self titled, The Misfits etc. This album is classic. Gone is the era of this brand of rap music and it saddens me, this album and others of its kind are all there is to hold on to. Those who understand know what I mean. The ones who don't, probably never will. Whatever though, "I'm just chillin' wit' my crew, peep the flava..."

This band is the motherfuckin' jumpoff! And I don't even say shit like that. I got their album, Celebration Castle in 2005. I listened to it once and didn't think it was all that special. But I never deleted it, I would just pass by it willy-nillily, hah. So then, earlier this year I'm reading some music blog trying to find some new tunes and I come across The Pony's 'Daytrotter Sessions' performance for download, 4 tracks. I get them, I loved them, I make the connection that I had heard the band before. I find out they have a new album out called Turn the Lights Out. So then I go back and listen to the other album again and sure enough, it's fucking rad. Every song is good. Then I got their new album, same deal. Song for song, The Ponys crank out the good shit. It's like the Rolling Stones, but more punk rock.

Josh is a friend of mine I met this past Summer in Manhattan. From the first time I stepped foot into what became my favorite bar, Max Fish (Ludlow st.) he was super friendly and super interesting. Upon interacting with him, I found out that he was not only a photographer, but that for years he had been shooting for my favoritest magazine, The Fader. I also found out that my man had just gotten back from shooting the cover and booklet photos for the new Yeah Yeah Yeah's EP, Is Is. Needless to say, I was gayer than T-Pain for this dude. No homo, but you get my point. What I love the most about his work is how candid and natural it is. His ability to capture the feeling of the moment is special. And granted, this isn't any of his professional work so it should all look natural. Above is a photo of Josh and my friend Bailey, the first person I met in new york. You can check his professional work with the numerous brand he's worked for. But, don't take my word for it, besides, what the shit do I know about art? I know T-Pain is gay...who doesn't though? The Black Lips are a band of misfits from Atlanta, Georgia. They are also self proclaimed “flower punks”, but they left out the part where they pull it off real well. This isn’t just fresh, punk, rock n’ roll/perfect party music; it inspires. Being a 22 year old ‘bad kid’, who has always been obsessed with real, solid bands, I find myself reeeal intrigued with the likes of Black Lips. The reputations they hold as being wet-brained delinquents, whose craft comes second to their antics may have been somewhat true in the earlier years. But, with the releases of their 3 latest Vice records they prove once, twice and especially third that they aren't just fucking around. The new album Good Bad Not Evil is not unlike those of their predecessors; Bob Dylan turned electric, Chuck Berry, The Sonics, Minor Threat, The Stooges, The Damned, etc. wherein you can’t help but want to follow these kids into a movement. Whether it’s a celebration of our flaws, saying fuck you to the large population of philistines roaming around this bitch because you just don’t care anymore, DIY artistic expression, or just an outlet for youthful getoffmydickitude. The bottom line: Listen to this band. For real though, buy/freeload their shit and play it a lot. They recorded a live album in Tijuana for fuck's sake, who does that? One of the guitarists has gold fronts on his teeth...yup. If it turns out that you don’t enjoy them, there’s a good chance that you have shitty taste in bands and probably everything else, Just kidding, but seriously, Nickelback is gay and so are you. LOL, LMAO, BRB, TTYL!

ZEASKEEZ - ROTARY

Well I say this because the band is dead... for now. The college band Zeaskeez, out of Clinton NY, has left the building... Some say their music is better then sex. Well, it might be better then Crazy Town-- or rather Smash Mouth... but some may disagree with the sex thing. I am THE biggest fan this band has. Why? Well some might say it is because I'm one of the guitarist's little brother and that I shared walls and a bathroom with him growing up and that I was forced fed vibrations from his guitar as the house we grew up in shook off it's foundation but uhhh, well... I think it's because they only have a hand full of fans other than yours truly. Charlie trained my ear and fine tuned my appreciation for music. Zeaskeez sound is an amalgamation of Les Claypool, Ween, and Miles. Actually I disagree with everything I just said, but I wrote it didn't I?

Other than Charlie the band is charged with creativity. Grant, the bassist, writes Primus-esque bass licks adding more of a musical mutation to what is already weird. Pete, the saxophonist, contributes gleeful rifts to the bands sound on his song Turbulence. The drummer, Sean Tice, kicks ass.[Sorry Sean I'll leave it to Amir to comment on your rythm, Dave Chapelle told me to]

The story behind Zeaskeez lies in the friendship between to straight queers. Well they're not gay but they're definitely life partners. Charlie and John started playing guitar together when they met in 7th grade at the Haverford School[an all boys school, interesting...] They played and recorded all through high school on Charlie's analog four tracks and then they went to Hamilton College together in upstate New York. This is where Zeaskeez was born. This crew of hippy-sters really gets me excited about life. They are completely insane. From streaking with the Hamilton Varsity streaking team, to shaping a burning man out of LSD, feathers, and fins this gang would have fit right in with the Pranksters... kinda.

The EP Rotary starts off with The Stain. For most people this is the quintessential Zeaskeez track. Bands such as Indobox and Moonbox like to cover this one written by Charlie.[ really those bands are one in the same but really whose counting] Next comes No Two Snowflakes. I don;t know who to credit exactly for this one but I promise you'll like it... or just skip over it. Then comes Turbulence, written by Pete. This song means alot to me; the harmonies though young are still wonderful. Next comes Dust and Twine Charlie's bluesy track. Lyrics are great too. Then comes James, the Les Claypool inspired song written by Grant. Last comes Painkillers. Charlie and John lived with a bunch of idiots their freshman year and one day their roommates friends proposed the idea that they all take painkillers and watch a movie on tv. This is where they got their lyrics, where they got their sound, well... thats a question you should save for the Devil.

Unfortunately my first post celebrates the life of our lost friend...
Amir and I recently lost a co-conspirator: Sir Spank-a-lot. Also known as Spanky, Sir Spank ruled the neighborhood. From rolling blunts with Night Sky to pimp slapping Pepper, Spank ment business. Having not been in the neighborhood since my move west I missed my chance to say goodbye to Spank. Amir can speak for himself but I assume he missed the boat having moved away too.
My last memory of Spanky also includes Amir. It was early august and we had just finished another trip to Roach and O'Briens to get fortys and sixers. Most definitely Yeungling and Stevewieser. Upon return there was Sir Spanks at the back door ready to do some serious lampin with the homies. Half way into the mess we were making in my parents kitchen Amir, Colin Hobyak, and I began to rant and rave about the Mocha Orange Feline. We laughed so hard the scene would have brought Bill Brasskey to tears.
We were people of war-path peace. Though seemingly innocent Spanky was a killer, just as we liked it. Spanky we miss you and don't forget to pass it to the left for Mr. Tuxedo up there.

RAD Person: Brendan Fowler

I got to spend the day with this guy over the past Summer when we were both working for A-Ron (Aaron Bandaroff of aNYthing) at his benefit concert at the St. Marks Church in Manhattan. I knew very little about who he was but; nonetheless, I thought he was cool as shit. While i was hanging out with some of A-Ron's other workers, Brendan cut open a box and passed out the newest issue of his quarterly publication ANP (artist network program). Everyone immediately gathered around to grab one, and I soon found out why. The magazine is spearheaded by him, Ed Templeton and a few others and is published by RVCA. It is designed to touch on a broader sense of art and community and to educate and inform openly without the social and financial restrictions that are more often than not, plaguing other publications in this day and age. Basically, they avoid contributing to the same old shit and they do it very well.

Brendan is also a musician. Growing up in Berkeley, California he attended high school with a few members of Animal Collective. Best known for his solo projects under the moniker BARR, which he's been releasing albums under since 2004. He's also a member of the band New England Roses, consisting of himself, Sarah Shapiro and JD of Le Tigre. When I saw him perform it was with his electronic, folk-pop duo, Car Clutch, which he started with a good friend of his, Ethan Swan. And it was very impressive. To make a long story short, this dude does more with his life than you ever will and none of his endeavors are lacking. Check him out at ANP's site/blog and peep his game on two of his latest BARR releases, 2005's Beyond Reinforced Jewel Case and Summary, released in 2007. Oh yeah, and Nickelback is gay...you're welcome, geeks.

New York City's acclaimed artist/sicko, Neck Face, opened his 'Hell-o-ween' gallery entitled "Closed Casket" this past October 31st. The gallery was held in the non-profit DACTYL space in Soho and was as bloody and hellish as ever. Packed to the gills with scenesters and pioneers alike, everyone in costume and everyone there to support one of NYC's most talked about and sought after artists of the past decade. Have a looksee, but don't say I didn't warn you:
